ATHOL - Richard D. Durkee, 67 of 703 Pleasant St., Athol, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at home. He was born in Athol, on February 2, 1941, the son of the late Clement and the late Mary (Bevis) Durkee. He attended schools in Athol and Orange. He worked at Erving Paper Mills for 38 years retiring in 2006. He was a former member of the Quabbin Anglers, Petersham Rod & Gun Club and the Athol Rod & Gun Club. Mr. Richard used to play baseball and basketball. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots teams. He loved his boat and fishing in the Quabbin. He collected antique bottles and enjoyed gardening. He had a great appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He leaves his wife of ten years: Carol (Chevalier) Durkee, two daughters: Karen Rahaim and husband Don of Plainfield, CT, Rebecca Ryan of Manchester, NH and one son: David Durkee of Athol; seven grandchildren: Angel Bishop, Devon Maglio, Ashley Hulette, Moriah Rahaim, Kara Rahaim, David Lurie and Tia Torres; three great grandchildren: Jonathan Bishop, James Bishop and Isabella Maglio; and two brothers: Edward J. Durkee of Meredith, NH and John C. Durkee of Attelboro. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to American Cancer Society's, New England Division Office, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
