Richard M. Kennedy

May 19, 1931 — November 21, 2017

Athol- Richard M. Kennedy, 86, of 48 Renshaw Rd. Hamden, CT, Associate Professor Emeritus of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, died November 21, 2017, after a brief illness. He resided in New Britain for twenty-two years before moving to Hamden in 1990. Mr. Kennedy, son of the late Milton and the late Emma (Nylander) Kennedy, was born May 19, 1931 in Athol. He was a high honors graduate of Athol High School, class of 1949 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree Magna Cum Laude in 1957 and a Master of Arts Degree in 1959, both in mathematics, from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He taught for four years at UMass and served six years as an Assistant Professor of mathematics at American International College in Springfield. He joined the faculty at CCSU in 1968 and retired in June 1992 as an Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences. While at CCSU he served as chairman of the then Department of Mathematics and Statistics for four years during the early 1980’s. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving there as a sergeant in the US Army I Corps Artillery and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Mr. Kennedy was a member of the Edward H. Phillips Post 102 American Legion, North Quabbin Lodge, A.F. & A.M., Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Athol Historical Society. His professional memberships included Sigma Xi, the Mathematical Association of America and the American Association of University Professors. He is survived by his brother; Russell E. Kennedy of Athol, sister; Barbara E. Woodcock and her husband Courtney of Greenfield and brother in-law John Wallace of Athol. He was predeceased by his sister Dorothy F. Wallace of Athol. Following cremation, a private burial service will be held in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol, at the convenience of the family.
