ATHOL - Richard Earl Shine, 73 of 1022 Cottage Street, Athol, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013 in the Legend Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Gardner.
He was born in Gardner, on March 4, 1940, the son of the late Earl J. and the late Lois I. (Taft) Shine.
Richard grew up in Athol and attended Athol schools. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Shine was a Firefighter for the Town of Athol for many years. He also operated a cleaning business for several years; was a bus driver for several years, delivered oil and worked construction for several local contractors.
He was a member of the Athol Lodge of Masons and a member of the Frogmen Diving Team for many years.
Richard enjoyed fishing, golfing and loved bowling.
He leaves three sisters, Gladys Turcotte of Enfield, CT, Ruth Taddeo of Warwick, Lois Genovese of Orange and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange. Burial with military honors will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
A calling hour will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 from 10:00 - 11:00 am at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to American Diabetes Association, 10 Speen St., 2nd Floor, Boston, MA 02210 or to Beacon Hospice 36 Williams St., Leominster, MA 01453.
