ATHOL - Robert M. Carey, 79 of 1 Terrace Ave., Athol, died Friday, March 30, 2007 at home. He was born in Athol, on May 8, 1927, the son of the late Frank R. and the late Alice P. (McEvoy) Carey. He grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School in 1946. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Marines, two years in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Carey was a Police Officer for the Town of Athol for a total of thirty four years ten as a permanent officer and twenty four as a provisional officer. Bob worked as a mechanic for the former Cass Garage for over thirty years. He was also employed by Union Twist Drill a divison of Litton Industries for ten years until the closing in 1985. He went on to work at Northfield Mt. Hermon School for four years until 1990. Bob enjoyed playing the drums, he was a member of the VFW Junior Drum Corps. He also played in several local bands including one with his father known as the Frank Carey Orchestra and later a band known as the Golden Rythem Band. Bob was active in the local Boy Scouts as a Scout Leader of Troop #18 for three years. He was well known for his tireless efforts for the Athol American Legion Post No. 102. He was a life member of the American Legion, past commander (twice 1994-1995 & 1996 - 1997). He was a member of Forty and Eight and past commader of Subdistrict 1 of District 4 of the American Legion. He was a member of the Worcester County Installment Team for the American Legion, a member of the Marine Corp League #1168, and current president of the Athol Veterans Council. Bob was the leader of the American Legion Honor Guard that provided military honors for local veterans. He was a member of the AMVETS since 1993. He leaves his wife: Ruth (Butcher) Carey, two daughters: Sharon Humphrey and her husband Ed of Orange, Brenda Smith of Athol and seven sons: Robert Carey and his wife Mary of Orange, Russell Carey and his wife Margaret of Greenfield, Norman Carey and his wife Terry of Athol, Brian Carey and his wife Donna of Richlands, NC, Michael Carey and his wife Linda of Jacksonville, NC, Bruce Carey and his wife Jeanne of Lowell, Frank Carey and his wife Amy of Quincy, CA; twenty eight grandchildren, thirty great grandchildren; a step daughter, Karen McClellan of Mason, NH; a step son, Roy McClellan of Mason, NH; and two step granddaughters. He was predeceased by his first wife, Loretta (Porter) Carey and by a brother, James Carey. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at 10:00 am in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial in Silver Lake Cemetery will be private at a later date. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, April 3, 2007, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home 137 Main St., Athol.
