ATHOL - Robert J. Gooley, 80 of 547 Central St., Winchendon, formerly of Athol, died Saturday, June 17, 2006 in the Broadview Rest Home, Winchendon.
He was born in Winchendon on April 11, 1926, the son of the late Frank A. and the late Hannah (Kelley) Gooley.
Robert lived in Winchendon until 1st grade before moving to Athol. He was drafted and left school to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the following campaigns, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and was awarded the combat infantry badge and good conduct medal. Several years ago, Robert was honored to participate in "Operation Recognition" for WW II Veterans where he was awarded his high school diploma. He was employed by the L.S. Starrett Company as a machinist/hardener for thirty-seven years where he was a member of the 25 Year Club. He was a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church and enjoyed music and performed locally in country music bands in the 1950´s, enjoyed photography and traveling with his wife Eunice.
He leaves his wife of forty-seven years; Eunice I. (LeBreton) Gooley, one son; Michael P. Gooley and his wife Toby of Newton and one grandchild; Dana B. Gooley of Newton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2006 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol, MA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady Immaculate Building Fund, 192 School St., Athol, MA 01331 or to the American Cancer Society's New England Division Office, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
