GARDNER - Robert Merlyn Grant, 77, of 61 Lake Street, Gardner, died Sunday, February 20, 2011 at the St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Robert was born and raised in Alburgh, Vermont, on May 31, 1933, the son of the late Edward and the late Ethel (Peyre) Grant. He enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War when he was seventeen years old. He served as PVT-1 until 1952 and received the Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal. He reenlisted and served as PVT-2 until his honorable discharge in 1955 and received the National Defense Medal. Mr. Grant moved to Gardner in 1955 and enlisted in the Army National Guard, serving until 1956. Several years ago he worked for local furniture companies, including the former Jim Crib Company and Heywood Wakefield Company until he became disabled in the late 1980s. Mr. Grant was a former member of the V.F.W. in Gardner and was a member of the American Legion Post in Alburgh, VT many years ago. He enjoyed fishing and was a coin-collector. Robert was a great gardener and loved his grandchildren dearly. He leaves his wife of twenty-eight years, Florence (Grant) Grant; one son, Norman Grant of Gardner; two step sons, Steven Grant and his wife Bonnie, Kenneth Grant and his wife Jane all of Winchendon; one daughter, Rose Grant of NH; three step daughters, Sally Francis of Winchendon, Karen Powers and her husband Steven of Baldwinville, Brenda Leary of Winchendon; four brothers, Norman Grant of FL, Dalton Grant of Burlington, VT, Walter Grant of Leominster, Richard Grant of Winooski, VT; two sisters, June Perreault of Fitchburg, Madeline Goyette of Crown Point, NY; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Joseph Grant, Howard Grant, Clifton Grant, Merlyn Grant and Willis Grant. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon St., Gardner. Burial in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon will be at a later date. Calling hours will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to American Cancer Society's New England Division Office, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. $(document).ready(function(){ });
