Robert “Bob†Matusewicz, 80, formerly of Templeton, MA, died suddenly of renal disease on December 13th in Bridgeville, Delaware. Bob was surrounded by his loving wife, Charlotte Matusewicz, his daughter Gina Fitzsimmons and her husband Terry Fitzsimmons.
He is also survived by his brother, William Matusewicz, and sister, Stella Smith, both of Templeton. He is predeceased by his son; Robert J. Matusewicz, Jr.
Bob was born on February 7, 1933 in Templeton, MA, the son of the late Jenny Hawryla and William Matusewicz. He graduated from the Templeton High School, Class of 1951, where he was a star center on the basketball team. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany where he met and fell in love with his wife of 58 years, Charlotte. When he returned, he worked at Rodney Hunt, a pump and hydraulic equipment company in Orange, MA. He moved to Maryland in 1962 where his work included management of a door manufacturing plant. He later worked for Westinghouse as a machinist on the Apollo Lunar TV Camera project which created the cameras used on NASA’s first manned lunar missions, including Apollo 11.
Bob had a special passion and talent for building, fixing and inventing machinery. In the lumber and wood processing fields he designed and built wood harvesters, sawmill equipment, mulch processing and colorization equipment, and went on to patent the Economill which used a one-cut process to cut logs into dimensional lumber, a technique still used to this day. He continued to work, up until his death, on his latest invention called “The Wheel“, which is used for residential power generation.
