ATHOL - Robert Neuvonen, 73, of 1797 Petersham Rd., Athol, died Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke.
He was born in Winchendon on March 6, 1937, the son of the late Tauno and the late Ruth (Keays) Neuvonen.
Bob was raised in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1955.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as a Security Policeman from 1955 to 1963 and earned the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Neuvonen worked for the Athol Post Office as a letter carrier for thirty-seven years until his retirement in 1996. Upon his retirement, he worked part-time as a watchman at the L. S. Starrett Tool Company and worked in the delivery department of Athol Automotive. He was a member of DAV in Athol, serving as Treasurer for over thirty years and as Commander for one year. Mr. Neuvonen enjoyed traveling with his family and visited many places throughout his life. He enjoyed camping and snowmobiling and was a member of the Quabbin Snowmen. He was passionate about animals and loved his rottweilers and his two cats. Bob was a devoted grandfather and loved his family dearly.
He leaves his wife of forty-nine years, Annette P. (Chartier) Neuvonen; two daughters, Diane Estevez and her husband Jose of Athol, Sharon McCarthy and her husband Kevin of Merrimack, NH; one brother, Alan Neuvonen of Athol; three grandchildren, Christopher Estevez of Athol, Katelyn McCarthy and Sarah McCarthy both of Merrimack, NH.
Calling hours will be held Monday, October 11, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol.
Funeral services and burial in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to Athol Animal Control c/o Animals Fund, 280 Exchange Street, Athol, MA 01331.
