ATHOL - Robert P. O´Brien, 85 of 739 Danile Shays Highway, Athol, died Friday, March 23, 2007 in the Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner. He was born in Dorchester, MA, on April 20, 1921, the son of the late Eugene and the late Ethel (Moynihan) O´Brien. He grew up in Braintree and Boston area. Mr. O´Brien was a veteran of World War II serving in the 327th Army Air Force Base Unit. He was honorably discharged on February 16, 1946 as a Staff Sergeant after 4 years of service. He was employed at Raytheon as an engineer for many years retiring in 1976. He moved to the Athol area in 1986 and has resided here since. He was a fomer member of St. Marks Golf Course in Southboro and also enjoyed playing golf locally at Ellinwood Country Club. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, traveling, photography and was a great artist. He coached little league baseball in Marlboro for many years. He leaves three sons, Fred Vanley of Tuscon, AZ, Michael O'Brien of Portsmouth, RI Robert P. O´Brien Jr. of Royalston; two sisters, Eleanor O'Brien and Genevieve O'Brien both of Malden, MA; six grandchildren, Brian, Brad, Jason, Shawn, Matthew and Patrick and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Gertrude E. O'Brien who died in 2005 and by a sister, Claire Lancaster. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 11:00 am in the Massachusetts Veterans´ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glendale St., Winchendon. No calling are are scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to American Parkinson's Disease Association, 715 Albany St., Boston, MA 02118.
