ATHOL - Robert Alan Porter, 75, of 14 Gibson Drive, Athol, died on Friday morning, August 26, 2011, at the Legend Center in Gardner after an illness.
He was born February 10, 1936 in Ayer, the son of the late George Porter and Stella (Taylor) Porter.
Mr. Porter worked as a machinist and in the maintenance department for various companies throughout the area.
He enjoyed drawing, cooking, poetry, baseball and football. Until his death Robert was vice president of the Lakeside Tennant Association.
He leaves his son, Joseph Porter of East Hampton; five daughters, Karen Cummings and her husband Garry of Warren, Cindy Henley and her husband Bob of Warren, Kim Christian and husband Chris of Quincy, Tammy Paglia of Gardner, Carol Opalenik and her husband Eric of Belchertown; a brother, Roger Porter of Nebraska; two sisters, Pauline Hall and her husband John of Maryland, Ruth Cole of Ayer; thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, many nephews and nieces.
His loving wife of forty years, Marjorie A. (Carpentier) Porter, died in 2002 and his brother, Carl Porter, of Maine predeceased him.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday August 30, 2011 in Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol, at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Tuesday morning, August 30, 2011, from 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
