Robert S. Schlicke
Phillipston – Robert S. Schlicke, 88, of Highland Avenue, died Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at his home.
Bob was born in Brookline, MA, November 11, 1926, the son of George and Doris (Shepherd) Schlicke. He grew up in Brookline, graduating from Brookline High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Stockbridge School of Agriculture.
Bob moved to Hubbardston where he operated the Cathedral Farm for several years, and also met his wife. Following their marriage they moved to Phillipston in 1950 where he worked for Peterson’s Dairy for 10 years. In 1961 he became the manager of the Athol Agway store until his retirement in 1989.
Bob was an active member of the Phillipston Congregational Church since 1950, serving as auditor, on the stewardship committee, canvas committee and also worked on the annual Village Bazar. He was a member of North Quabbin Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M., enjoyed gardening, following the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox and most especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
He leaves two sons, Donald Schlicke of Phillipston and Kevin Schlicke and his wife Gail of Hopkinton, MA; two daughters, Susan Ziats and her husband Joe of Middletown, PA and Cindy Coppolino and her husband Dominic of Oakham, MA; eight grandchildren and one great grandson; a nephew, David Flint of Orange and two nieces, Dianna Dugas of Orange and Kathleen Senior, Auburn, MA and many other nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Lenore C. (Murdock) Schlicke who died in 2004, a son, Steven Schlicke in 2005 and a twin sister, Elizabeth Flint in 2002.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Phillipston Congregational Church, 60 The Common, Phillipston with the Rev. Stephanie Flynn, pastor officiating.
Calling hours will be held Friday, January 16, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol. Burial will be in lower cemetery in Phillipston in the spring. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations may be made in Bob’s name to the Phillipston Congregational Church, 60 The Common, Phillipston, MA 01331.
