ATHOL - Roger A. Spooner, 77, of Athol, died on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus in Worcester.
Roger was born in Athol on June 5, 1933, the son of the late Harold and the late Doris (Hunt) Spooner. He was raised and educated in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1950. Mr. Spooner served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1950 to 1970 as a Machinist's Mate and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the China Service Medal during his three enlistments. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, Roger worked for Barre Wool Company for four years and employed by the Town of Athol in the maintenance department for over five years. More recently, he worked for the Athol Table Shop as an assembler for over ten years until his retirement in 1999. Roger was a farmer and outdoorsman who enjoyed reading about world history.
He leaves three daughters, Cheryl A. Bailey and her husband Russell Sr. of Athol, Yvonne G. Girard of Orange, Wendy C. VanOs of Athol; one son, Joseph E. Bradford and his wife Laura of Davenport Center, NY; two sisters, Gertrude Petrowicz of East Swanzey, NH, Louise Dugan of Arden, NC; eight grandchildren, Christian Bradford of Japan, Joshua Bradford and his wife Cynthia of Portland, ME, Russell Bailey, Jr. of Athol, Mary LaMarche and her husband Josh of Athol, June Truehart and her husband Keith of Athol, Leia Girard of Orange, Damien Girard of Orange, Jacobis VanOs of Athol; four great grandchildren, Ryan Bailey, Jade Bailey, Aiden Truehart, Aurore LaMarche, all of Athol; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of thirty-two years, Pauline L. Spooner, on May 29, 2005; also by his four children due to a house fire in 1964, Peter, Alan, Virginia and Patricia Spooner; by his brother, Charles C. "Pete" Spooner, on March 10, 2011; by his son-in-law, Kirk VanOs; and by his grandson, Ethan VanOs.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Doe Valley Cemetery, Doe Valley Road, Athol. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to American Cancer Society's New England Division Office, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
