On Tuesday, May 7th, 2024, our beloved Albert Leroy Hughes of Westminster, Massachusetts succumbed to pancreatic cancer after a long, courageous battle. He passed away peacefully after a weekend that found him surrounded by loved ones. With his beautiful wife Gloria (Cowling) Hughes at his side, he was showered with the love and adoration of his family in his final moments.
Roy, as he was known to his family and friends, was born on January 7th, 1937 in Elmira, New York. He was the son of Albert and Irene Hughes, who raised him to become the wonderful father and family man we knew. He and Gloria, in their 62 years together, raised four children and were blessed with eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He adored each and every one of them, making it clear to all that they would be photographed at every family gathering when his camera was in hand.
Roy was a proud Army veteran, a true American patriot, and a consummate professional. His work ethic and commitment to a job well done were second to none. He began working for the Simplex Time Recorder Company in Elmira in 1963. He was transferred to Gardner, Massachusetts in 1970 where he would develop the training and education department for the company. He remained dedicated to this work until the year 2000, retiring as the manager of the department.
While Roy was establishing himself as a valuable commodity in the business world, he and Gloria were creating their forever home in the neighboring town of Westminster. He was a pillar in the community, active in the lives of his children, and committed to acts of volunteerism and civic responsibility. Roy was a Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts of America, coached little league for thirteen years, and was a member of the Westminster/Ashburnham school committee, eventually becoming the chairman. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and was a regular volunteer as a poll worker for the voters of Westminster. He was proud to serve his community.
Roy and Gloria spent their years together making wonderful memories and sharing incredible adventures. Roy loved to travel, enjoying journeys to places like Australia, Iceland, and many countries in Europe with his beloved wife, hoping to return to Venice one day. When at home, he was known to engage in multiple hobbies including woodworking, photography, and dabbling on his computer. He was known to his family as “Mr. Fix-It” and created beautiful handcrafted wooden furniture for his children. Those pieces are treasures that can never be matched or replicated.
Roy is predeceased by his daughter, Stacie Bergeron, wife of Robert Bergeron, and his son, Marty Hughes, husband of Nancy Hughes. He is survived by his sons Scott Hughes, fiancé of Margaret Corini, and Mitchell Hughes, husband of Andrea Hughes. Through these relationships, the family grew to include many grandchildren (Cassie, Zachary, Nicholas, Connor, Carter, and Abigail) followed by four beautiful great-grandchildren (Charlie, Brody, Delali, and Julian). The family is strong and loving and shares a closeness that was fostered by Roy and Gloria. Their family legacy will long endure.
