GARDNER – Roy E. Hurd, 88 , of 395 Pearl St., Gardner died Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Gardner on June 14, 1924 the son of Rachael Hurd. Roy lived most of his life in Westminster moving to Gardner in 1997.
Mr. Hurd was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, he received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, Combat Medal with three battle stars and the Victory Medal.
Roy was a Carpenter and a member of the Local #48 in Fitchburg for 25 years.
He attended the Westminster Congregational Church, was a life member of the Westminster V.F.W. Post #7389 and was Past Commander. He was the founder of Boy Scouts Troop #33 in Westminster, a member of the Westminster Historical Society and helped in the preparation of the 250th anniversary book and was a member of the Friendship Club of Westminster.
He leaves three sons, Arno E. Hurd of Auburn, Charles E. Hurd of Scotland, CT, Stephen R. Hurd of Athol; eight daughters, Kathy A. Wentworth of Tewksbury, Barbara A Cernobyl of Dover, DE, Susan Hurd of Kingstown, RI, Pamela J. Norman of Washington D.C., Donna M. Hurd of Tewksbury, Patricia S. Hurd, of Westminster, Mary E. Kinder of Panama City, FL, Sandra L. Clark of Addison, VT; twenty grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Ruth L. (Packard) Hurd who died in 2001 and by a daughter, Martha S. Hurd who died in 2010.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the Mack Funeral Home, 91 Vernon St., Gardner. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodside Cemetery, Westminster.
Calling hours will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Mack Funeral Home.
