Ruth Crawford

d. July 3, 2014

Of Athol, formerly of Brookline.  Passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on July 3, 2014.   Devoted wife for 29 years of the late William H. Crawford. Loving mother of Kirk James and his wife Fern of Brookline, Barbara Rainey and her husband Jeff of Rio Rico, AZ, Kyle Carey and her husband Fred of Oakham and Liz Kincannon and her husband Ben of Wayland.  Proud grandmother of Matthew James, Heather Brewer, Jeffrey Rainey, Patrick Carey, and William and Colin Fulton.  Predeceased by grandson Peter James.  Great-grandmother of Hannah, Joseph and Benjamin Brewer and Gavin Rainey.   Ruth once wrote, “The most important thing that I did in my life was raising my children. I think I am darn lucky.”  Throughout her life she was more concerned about others than she was about herself.  Her warm smile, sense of humor, vibrant, engaging personality and positive outlook touched everyone.   Along with husband Bill she was an active member of The United Parish community in Brookline and volunteered in many ways:  planting and nurturing the Church’s Memorial Garden, helping to organize and run a Thrift Store, and participating in the hand bell ringers group.  She loved learning and was an adventurous traveler.  Over the years, mostly in their camper, Ruth and Bill visited all 50 states and numerous foreign countries.  She kept a journal and sent many post cards.  Ruth believed, “Age is a state of mind.” She often advised, “Don’t worry; it will get you nowhere.” Her indomitable spirit will be sorely missed.   The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of Quabbin Valley Health Care in Athol, MA for the wonderful care and good humor enjoyed by Ruth over the last 7 years. A private burial is being planned.  In lieu of flowers donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to Quabbin Valley Health Care, Alzheimer’s Unit, 821 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, MA 01331. $(document).ready(function(){ });
