LEOMINSTER - Salvador Rivera Rivera 86 of 37 Lowell St. Leominster MA. a resident of the Bedford V A Hospital and Care Facility in Bedford MA died Wednesday October 21, 2009 in the Bedford VA Hospital Bedford MA after an illness.
He was born April 27, 1923 in Dorado Puerto Rico the son of the late Modesto Rivera and Celestina (Rivera) Rivera.
He leaves his wife of (63) Years, Carmen B. (Marrero) Rivera. One son Modesto Rivera and his wife Myriam of New Haven Connecticut. Two Daughters, Carmen Fage and her husband Rick of Leominster MA. and Elva Guile and her husband Gordon of Leominster.
Four Brothers, Felix Rivera of Chicago, Julio Rivera, Gervasio Rivera, and Demetrio Rivera all of Puerto Rico. Two sisters, Genovera Rivera of North Carolina and Carlina Santana of Puerto Rico. Seven Grandchildren, Lisa Gjeltema, Lindy Sauls, Sarita Fage, Rosanna Kearchner, Nathan Guile, Gabriel Guile and Andrew Guile. Four Great Grandchildren, Daniel Fenner, Nadia Kearchner, Jazlynn Guile and Dylan Guile. Many nephews and nieces.
A brother Jose Rivera of Puerto Rico and a sister Angela Huertas of Puerto Rico predeceased him.
Salvador graduated from Durado High School in Durado Puerto Rico in 1940, later attending Leominster Trade School to become a Machinist. He was employed at American Tool and Machine Co in Fitchburg for (11) Years retiring in 1980.
Mr. Rivera Rivera served in the United States Army for over (20)Years retiring at the rank of Staff Sgt. He entered the military May 15,1943 and was discharged December 11,1967.He served in World War 2,the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War .A highly decorated veteran he received the World War 2 Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, American Theater Service Medal with 5 Overseas Service Bars, Combat Infantry Badge, American Campaign Medal, Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 1960 and the Army Commendation Medal.
He was a member of both the Fitchburg and Leominster Senior Centers. He enjoyed doing electrical work, farming and entertaining his friends and family at his home.
A funeral service will be held on Friday evening at 7pm in Simard Funeral Home 14 Walker St.Leominster MA. Burial with full military honors will be held on Monday October 26, 2009 at 11am in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery 111 Glenallen St. Winchendon MA.
