ATHOL- Sara A. Whitney, age 93, of Athol died peacefully at home on Friday, August 28, 2015. Sara was born March 9, 1922 in Lancaster, PA. She is the daughter of the late Fred S. and the late Emma (Mellinger) Eshleman. She married Paul W. Whitney on July 13, 1948.
She graduated from Penn Manor High School in Millersville, PA in 1939 and Millersville University with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1943.
She was employed as a teacher in Pennsylvania and later in the Athol-Royalston School District. After retiring Paul and Sara enjoyed traveling around the country visiting family and friends in PA and California. Sara enjoyed Hawaii and Alaska and a trip to Great Britain with her granddaughter Anna the most. She also enjoyed her garden and watching the birds in her back yard.
She was a member of Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church serving as a superintendent of Sunday School, Sunday school teacher, prayer group and many other committees. She also enjoyed the Y.M.C.A. swimnastics group and the Friends of the Library.
She is survived by one daughter: Sylvia Wetherby and her husband Tom of Wendell; two granddaughters; Gretchen Wetherby and her Husband George Gajda of Millers Falls and Anna Wetherby of Wendell; two sisters: Mary Jane Huber of Ronks PA, Ruth Eshleman of Lancaster PA.
A memorial service will be held at the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, 40 Island Street, Athol, on Sunday September 13, 2015 at 2PM.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, the Gardner VNA and Hospice or a charity of your choice.
Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol, is directing arrangements.
