LEOMINSTER - Shirley (Bell) Carbone, 83, formerly of Athol, Mass and Calabash, North Carolina, died peacefully Jan. 23rd after a hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
She was born on November 7, 1935 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She graduated from St. Paul’s High School in 1954 and was a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines, stationed in Boston where she met the love of her life, Oreste Carbone, Sr. They celebrated 59 years of marriage last November.
Shirley was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and aunt. She cherished her family and nothing made her happier than spending time with them and preparing endless meals for anyone that entered into her home.
She was a trustee of the Athol Savings Bank and enjoyed gardening, summers at Packard Heights Pond, boating on Lake Winnipesaukee, camping and traveling (especially to Italy) and being with her beloved dog, Benji, who never left her side.
Shirley was a devout Roman Catholic and is now sleeping peacefully with the angels and our Lord.
She leaves her husband: Oreste Carbone, Sr; children: Oreste Carbone Jr, Mia Carbone and her partner Joanne Hernandez, Cara Mantz and her husband, Jimmy, Danielle Battaini, Chad Carbone, and his wife Elizabeth; her brother Robert Martin and his wife Pam. Shirley adored her 8 grandchildren, Zachary, Jennessa, Samantha, Tara, Rory, Shelby, Jordin and Emilia; 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Lamberto and Serena Martin.
The family would like to thank all of her very special care givers, who were more like family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 28th at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol, MA. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol, MA.
Calling Hours will be held Sunday, January 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Chapel, 110 New Athol Rd., Orange, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to The Carbone Alzheimer’s Fund. IC Credit Union, 300 Bemis Road, Fitchburg, Mass.
