PETERSHAM Sister Marie-Anne Lavoie, a Sister of the Assumption of Petersham, MA, passed away peacefully April 7, 2010. On March 22, 2010 Sister Marie celebrated her one hundred and first birthday. A native of Salem, MA, she attended Salem High School, worked in the local mills and then became a professed religious of the Assumption Congregation. As a middle-grade teacher, Sister Marie, known by the religious name of Sister Marguerite de Nevers, taught in various parochial schools of the Congregation especially in Glens Falls, NY and Barton, VT. Her retirement years were spent performing community services and prayer ministry at Assumption Residence in Petersham, MA. When illness limited her active life, she was welcomed at the Wellness Center of the same facility. Sister Marie-Anne is survived by one sister, Juliette Turcotte of Salem, several nieces and nephews and the beloved members of her religious community, the Sisters of the Assumption. Calling hours for the wake will be held at Assumption Residence, 211 North Main Street, Petersham, on Sunday, April 11, from 2 - 7 pm with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 12 at 10:00 am at the Sisters of the Assumption, 211 N. Main St., Petersham. Burial will follow in East Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of the Assumption Retirement Fund, 211 N. Main St., Petersham.
