PETERSHAM – The Sisters of the Assumption mourn the loss of Sr. Lucille Mercier, formerly known as Sr. Lucille-du-Sacre Coeur, who passed away at the age of 94 at Marie Esther Health Center in Marlborough, MA on Sunday, January 19, 2014 after a brief illness.
Sister Lucille Mercier, a native of Lowell, Ma and a Sister of the Assumption since 1943, was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Laverdiere) Mercier of Lowell. She attended St. Louis Elementary School, Lowell, MA and Notre Dame Academy of Tyngsboro, MA. She obtained her Bachelor and Masters’ degrees from Catholic University, Washington, DC and Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY.
Sr. Lucille was a high school teacher and principal in the various Assumption community schools of Southbridge, Salem, Lowell, MA and Laconia, NH. She authored the book On American Soil, a History of the Sisters of the Assumption in the United States.
St. Lucille is survived by her sister Jeannette (Mercier) Barry of Lowell, MA, several nieces, nephews and her religious family, the Sisters of the Assumption.
Her wake will be held at St. Anne Convent in Marlboro, MA from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 10 a.m. followed by interment in the East St. Cemetery, Petersham, MA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sisters of the Assumption Retirement Fund, 211 North Main St., Petersham, MA 01366.
