PETERSHAM – The Sisters of the Assumption mourn the loss of Sr. Rita Therrien, 94, formerly known as Sr. Rita-de-Jesus, who passed away at Marie Esther Health Center in Marlboro, MA on Friday, March 21, 2014. She was a native of Millbury, Massachusetts, the daughter of Eliza (Mainville) Therrien and Oscar Therrien.
Sr. Rita entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Assumption in January of 1942. Following her profession in 1944, she served in the ministry of education in parochial schools, as a teacher and librarian in MA, NH, VT and RI for over forty years. She also served as Maintenance Assistant at Assumption Residence in Petersham. For the past five years she resided at the Marie Esther Health Center in Marlboro, MA.
Sr. Rita is survived by her nieces, Karen Basinet and Gail Therrien, her nephew, Steven, cousins, the Sisters of the Assumption worldwide, and the Sisters of St. Anne and Staff in Marlboro, MA.
Calling hours will be on Monday, March 24, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, closing with a Prayer Service at the Sisters of St. Anne Convent, 720 Boston Post Road East, Marlboro, MA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Sisters of St. Anne, in Marlboro, MA. Sr. Rita will be l aid to rest in the East Street Cemetery, Petersham.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of the Assumption Retirement Fund, 211 No. Main Street, Petersham, MA 01366.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home 110 New Athol Road, Orange.
