ATHOL - Stanley T. Salahna, Jr., 75, of 32 Oliver Street, Athol, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at home.
He was born in Athol, on April 19, 1933, the son of the late Stanley T. and the late Anna (Mazialnik) Salahna, Sr.
Mr. Salahna grew up in Athol and attended local schools, graduating from Athol High School with the class of 1951. He was an outstanding high school athlete, and was captain of the basketball and baseball teams. He served during the Korean War in the United States Army from March 24, 1953 to March 17, 1955 as a Corporal. He received the Korean Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Merit Unit Commendation.
Mr. Salahna worked for the former Union Twist Drill in Athol as a cutter grinder for 27 years until it's closing. He then worked for Niagara Cutter in Athol for several years, retiring in 1996. He was a lifetime member of the American Lithuanian Naturalization Club in Athol, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Athol. He was a sports enthusiast and a fan of all Boston sports teams. He enjoyed keeping score for his grandchildren's baseball games, and spending time with his family.
He leaves two sons, Thomas M. Salahna and his wife Dianne of Orange, Jon S. Salahna and his wife Darlene of Athol; two daughters, Cheryl Chaisson and her husband Andrew of Jaffrey, NH, Salli Knechtel and her husband Karl of Athol; seven grandchildren, Shannon Salahna, Derrick Knechtel, Torey Salahna, Andrew Chaisson, all of Athol, Jordan Salahna, Justin Salahna, both of Orange, and Zachary Chaisson of Jaffrey, NH.
He was predeceased by his sister, MaryAnne Burnham, who died in 2002.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St., Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Athol High School Scholarship Association, P.O. Box 338, Athol, MA 01331, or to the Mahar Teachers' Association Scholarship, P.O. Box 680, Orange, MA 01364.
