ATHOL – Stanley G. Sherman, 70, of 739 Daniel Shays Highway, Athol, and formerly of Fitzwilliam, NH, passed away peacefully at 1:20 am on Thursday, October 6th at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol in the presence of his loving wife Sharon and longtime dear friend Linda Barndollar of Keene, NH. Stan had suffered a serious stroke in early May. Honoring his wishes, hospice was brought in on September 27th.
Stan was born on December 26, 1945 in Laconia, NH to Vincent Sherman of St. Johnsbury, VT and Marion (Kirker) Sherman of Cambridge, MA. He grew up in and around Alstead and Keene NH.
Stan worked for a number of years as a Food Service Manager for several hospitals in NH and VT. He developed demo programs and classes for garnishing. His interest in food service was inspired by working at the Town Diner in Keene under the guidance of Mr. Sweet.
Stan was a longtime member of AA with 42 years of sobriety. He was well known throughout NH, VT and MA for traveling on commitments to countless meetings over the years. He was also known as someone who always extended a helping hand to newcomers and was quite an inspiration to all who knew him.
He was an avid golfer and he and his wife Sharon loved playing together as much as possible and walking 18 holes for exercise. Stan achieved a hole-in-one in 2001 on the 16th hole at Brentwood in Keene. Sharon achieved a hole-in-one in 2015 on the first hole at the Monadnock Country Club in Peterborough. Stan and Sharon were very proud of each other.
Stan loved cooking and baking cookies. He also spent many years enjoying motorcycle riding and traveling. He and his wife took trips to Seattle, Montana, Nova Scotia and all over New England.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 21 years: Sharon (Addington) Sherman; four sisters: Vicki Forcier and her husband Richard of Keene, Roberta Nickson of Mississippi; Lynn Blackman of Virginia; Sandy Sherman and her husband Richard Whitney of Stoddard, NH; one brother: Vincent Sherman Jr. and his wife Shanshan Cai of Stoneham, MA. He was predeceased by his parents Vincent and Marion Sherman.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 1:00 pm in Silver Lake Cemetery, Silver Lake St., Athol, MA. (Horrigan Ave. Entrance)
A celebration of Life will be held sunday, October 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the serenity Center, Carpenter St., Keene, NH. All family and friends are welcome.
