Stanley C. Watkevich, 92, of 96 Conant Road, Athol, died peacefully on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare after a brief illness.
He was born in Athol on September 18, 1921, the son of Charles and Anna (Gatautis) Watkevich. His loving wife of 65 years Muriel “Mikey†passed away in 2011.
Stanley leaves his three daughters; Marie Capone of Athol, her daughter Jessica Bigwood and husband Eric; daughter Jeanne Hackney and husband Ray of Barre, Ma., children Erin Haskell and husband Chris of Worcester, Ethan Hodge and wife Juliet of Coral Springs, Florida, and Evan Hodge of Chelmsford, Ma.; and daughter Nancy Thomson and Richard Brooks of Templeton; three sons, Gregory Watkevich and his wife Kathrine of Athol, children Mary Kathrine of Vermont and Emily of Orange; Stanley C. Watkevich, Jr. and his wife Judy of Naples, Florida and their children Laura and Lindsey; Glenn Watkevich and his wife Renee of Wilson, NC and their children Bobby, Grace and Charlie; one sister, Alice Knappe of Athol, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Stanley was predeceased by his brother, Frank Watkevich of Athol.
Stanley served in the army in WWII as a sergeant in Company B 321st Infantry Regiment in the western pacific and southern Philippines. He was awarded several medals and ribbons for his service. His story is featured in the book Veteran’s of Foreign War written by a local author.
Stanley retired from L.S. Starrett in 1982, after working over 25 years for the company. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, gardening with Mikey and working around the house. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Ellinwood Country Club for over 30 years and a member of the Barefoot Bay Golf Club in Florida where he and Mikey spent their winters.
It was Stanley and Mikey’s request to have one service to celebrate their life together. Calling hours will be held Friday, August 8 at 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral home at 110 New Athol Road, Orange, Ma. Burial of both Stanley and Mikey will be at 1:00 pm at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Winchendon, Ma.
