Vernon P. "Pete" Miller

LEOMINSTER - Vernon P. "Pete" Miller, 86 of 800 Lancaster St., Leominster, died Sunday, November 23, 2008 in Sterling Healthcare, Sterling, after an illness. He was born in Leominster on May 1, 1922, the son of the late Leo J. and the late Ida (Albert) Miller. He served during WWII in the Navy from October 1942 to December 1945 attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He was a retired Firefighter, employed by the City Of Leominster for 30 years serving on Engine #2 as Driver/Operator. Mr. Miller began his firefighting career on March 1, 1949 and retired December 31, 1977. He was president of the Leominster Firefighters Relief Association in 1969. Mr. Miller was on the 1947 Dodge Brush truck when it was hit by a train on Battles St. in Leominster on September2, 1953. Mr. Miller was the organizer of Boy Scouts of America Troops 477 and 18. He was a communicant of St. Cecilia's church, a member of the Boy Scouts of America, the Leominster Eagles and the Disabled American Veterans. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. He enjoyed tinkering with everything. He leaves his wife of 62 years: Theresa M. (Nault) Miller, three daughters: Elaine Archambeault of Fitchburg, Carol Geier and husband Rick of Winchendon, Denise Prinsen and husband Alan of Northbridge; one son: Paul Miller and wife Cheryl of Rindge, NH; one brother: Leo Miller of Leominster; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his three sisters: Theresa Perry, Lorraine Jackson and Yula Gibson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 12:00 pm in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic Street, Leominster. Burial will be Monday, December 1, 2008 at 11:00 am in Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glendale Rd., Winchendon. Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the Boy Scouts of America c/o the Nashua Valley Council BSA, 1980 Lunenburg Rd., Lancaster, MA 01523.
