Virgil J. Duguay Athol – Virgil J. Duguay, 86, of 208 Fairview Avenue, P.O. Box 263 died Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Charlene Manor in Greenfield.      Virgil was born in Athol, Massachusetts, January 21, 1927, the son of Uldric and Sara (Cormier) Duguay and was from a family of 10 children. He grew up attending Athol schools and has lived in Athol all of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Duluth (CL-87) Light Cruiser and participated in operations in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.        Virgil worked for the Metropolitan District Commission at the Quabbin Reservoir for several years until his retirement.  He had previously worked for Our Lady Immaculate Church maintaining the cemetery.  He also worked for several area shoe manufacturers and worked various construction jobs.         Virgil enjoyed dancing, bowling, cards, bingo, fishing, riding his motorcycle and scooter.  He performed in the Athol YMCA minstrel shows for many years.  He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, singing in the choir at St. Francis and Our Lady Immaculate churches and was also a member of the Edward H. Phillips American Legion Post # 102 and the National DAV.      Virgil will be missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Arline N. (Dunican) Duguay; two sons, Gerard Duguay and his wife Sharon of Shoreline, WA and Christopher Duguay and his wife Beth of Winchendon; four grandchildren;  Jaime and her husband Sriki Vourganti of Atlanta, GA, Garrett, Adrienne and Alaura of Shorline, WA; three sisters, Rita Rivers, Bertha Alliott and Noella Boutelle, all of Athol; and a brother, Norman Duguay and his wife Dawn of Orange; sister-in-law, Flora Duguay of Athol and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by three brothers, George, William and Albert Duguay and two sisters, Bella Goupil and Rena Duguay.      A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 105 Main Street, Athol with the Rev. Fr. Krzysztof Korcz, pastor officiating.  Burial will follow at Silver Lake Cemetery and there will be a calling hour Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations may be made in Virgil’s name to:  St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the St. Francis of Assisi Church Building Fund.
