GARDNER - Walter E. Hill, 95 a lifelong resident of Gardner, died Friday, December 7, 2007 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol. He was born in Gardner, on April 30, 1912, the son of the late Wladislaw and the late Teofila (Zawrotny) Hill. He attended Gardner public schools. He served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps during World War II. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, a member of the Gardner VFW, the former PAV, and the Gardner PACC. Walter was employed for many years at the former Gem Crib and Cradle, Co., Brazell's Package Store in Gardner, and retired from Girardi Distributors in Athol. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He leaves one daughter: Phyllis Knecht of Ludlow; four grandchildren: Mark Bernatowicz of Oak Hill, VA., and his wife Dianne, Gary Bernatowicz of Ludlow, Michael Bernatowicz of Westerly, R.I. and his wife Susan Costa, and Jeffrey Bernatowicz of Yakima, WA.; three great grandchildren: Nicholas and James Bernatowicz and John Costa, a sister, Helen Nadeau of Orleans, MA, and a brother Edward Hill of Dataw Island, SC. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Gladys M. (Dumanosk) Hill, who died in 1991, a brother Chester, and sisters Genevieve Menne and Nellie Amundsen. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312, or the charity of one's choice.
