With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Walter E. Sussbauer, beloved husband of Lucille M. Therrien, father, grandfather, and dedicated community member of Ashburnham, who left us on October 29, 2024, at the age of 77. Born in Fitchburg, MA, on December 1, 1946, to Vieno and John Sussbauer, Walter was a lifelong resident of Ashburnham, Massachusetts. A man of quiet wit and humor, Walter was a pillar of strength, support, and love to all those who knew him.
A graduate of Northeastern University, Walter's career as a Heavy Equipment Operator in the construction industry spanned more than thirty years, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2010. A man of many hats, Walter was the Chair of the Ashburnham Zoning Board of Appeals, a member of the Ashburnham Water and Sewer Commission, and a coach during the years his children played Little League. He was instrumental in moving the library into the Dolly Whitney Adams Schoolhouse in the late 1980s, marking yet another significant contribution the Ashburnham community.
In addition to his professional and civic activities, Walter was a loving family man and a passionate hobbyist. He cherished spending time with his wife, Lucille, whom he married on February 13, 1994, relishing in their shared love for travel. Walter found joy in the simple pleasures of life - feeding the birds, watching the wildlife in his yard, learning the difference between wildflowers and weeds, tinkering and learning how things worked. Yet, what mattered most to Walter was the precious time he spent with his family and close friends. Walter's love, compassion, and support left a lasting impact on all those he touched and he will be deeply missed.
Walter is survived by his loving wife, Lucille M. Therrien; his children, Erik (Barbara) Sussbauer and step-children, Thomas (Angie) Rossignol, Robert (Matthew Perez) Rossignol, Jr., and David (Melanie) Rossignol; his grandchildren, Adam and William Sussbauer, Jonathan, Amanda, Jocelyn, and Julia Rossignol; his brother, Jack (Patty Mahardy) Sussbauer, Diane Willard (mother of his children) and others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vieno and John Sussbauer; his son, Todd Sussbauer, and brother, James Sussbauer.
A private service will be held for the family.
