ATHOL - Walter W. Thiem, 80 of 2239 Chestnut Hill Ave., Athol, died Thursday, June 14, 2007 at home.
He was born in Lawrence, on February 22, 1927, the son of the late Gustav and the late Clara (Hannig) Thiem.
He graduated from Lawrence High School and the University of Massachusetts School of Agriculture in 1947. Mr. Thiem married Madeleine Thatcher July 24, 1954.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army he was honorably discharged on September 7, 1956.
Walter worked at Haven Farms in Athol from 1947 to 1954. After his service in the Army he worked for Bachelder Oil for many years, worked for the L.S. Starrett Company for a year and retired from Temple Oil. He also worked as a school bus driver for Holy Rosary School, Franklin County Technical School and for Merrifield Bus Company.
He enjoyed his small family farm and time spent with his children and grandchildren.
He leaves his wife of fifty-two years, Madeleine (Thatcher) Thiem; three daughters, Alice Ferrari of Athol, Margaret Cromwell of Florida, Deborah Keresey and her husband Michael of Athol and two sons, Robert Thiem and his wife Lynn of Athol, William Thiem and his wife Katherine of Athol; thirteen grandchildren, Michael Ferrari, Greta Ferrari, Matt Ferrari, Marya-Lyn Cromwell and Kevin Cromwell, Seth Brousseau, Joslyn Thiem, Jordyn Thiem, Jamison Thiem, Jaret Thiem and Jeffrey Thiem, and Jonathan Thiem and Zachary Thiem; and one brother, Gerhard Thiem of California.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 16, 2007 at 10:00 am in Fiske Funeral Home, 1356 Main Street, Athol. Burial will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Friday, June 15, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
