ATHOL - Wilbert J. Godin, age 84, of Athol died Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare, Athol.
Mr. Godin was born February 8, 1930 in Athol, the son of the late Clement and the late Laura (Mallet) Godin.
He lived in Athol all his life and attended Athol schools. He played Semi-Pro football for several years.
Mr. Godin served in the Massachusetts State Guard during World War II. He was a communicant of Our Lady Immaculate Church. He was a member of STEBS, A.A.R.P and, was a third degree knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the Franco American Club and the North Quabbin Anglers Association.
He worked for J.F. McElwain's for 20 years and went on to work for the L.S. Starrett Company for 24 years, until his retirement in 1992. He worked part-time at Ellinwood Country Club and for the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home.
He did a lot of hunting and fishing and, he enjoyed many years of camping in Maine and many other places. A Boston sports fan, he enjoyed the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics. He also enjoyed playing cribbage.
He touched the heart of everyone he met and made sure they had a laugh and a smile.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy R.(Nicewicz) Godin , one daughter, Patricia Godin and her partner Mary DeAngelis of South Dennis, MA; two sons, Gary Godin and his wife Kathleen of Rutland, James Godin and his wife Laura of Natick; one sister, Annette Rogman and her husband Lee of Elgin, IL; two brothers, Girard Godin and his wife Frances of Athol, Valment Godin of Athol; four grandchildren, Brendan Godin of Charlotte, NC, Kaitlyn Godin of Rutland, Gwynith Godin of Natick, Griffan Godin of Natick; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 29, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Athol.
Calling hours will be Thursday, August 28, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Fiske-Murphy & Mack Funeral Home, 110 New Athol Road, Orange, MA.
