William J. McIntosh

William J. McIntosh Athol – William J. McIntosh, 84, died Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Athol Hospital, one day short of his 85th birthday.      He was born June 2, 1929 in Athol, MA, the first child of the late Adelbert W. and Hazel (Rich) McIntosh.  Know to his friends and family as Bill, he grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School in 1947.  On December 26, 1953, he married Marilyn (Perry) McIntosh.  He is the father of Judith A. McIntosh and Sandra M. Knight, both of Athol.         Bill served in the U.S. Army Security Agency Signal Corp during the Korean War.  Bill owned the Colonial Gas Service of Athol with his business partner, Edward Larry.  After selling the business, he worked for Bentley Gas Service of Barre and Incentive Community Enterprises.  He retired in May of 1992 and enjoyed the last years of his life with his wife and family.         His passions included spending time with his family and doing community service.  He belonged to the North Quabbin Lodge A.F. & A.M. and was a 32nd degree Mason.  He also was a member of the American Legion Post #102, the Athol Congregational Church for over 70 years and serving on the Board of Trustees.   Bill had a terrific sense of humor and made friends all over town, he will be missed by his family, friends and community.         Besides his wife and daughters he leaves three grandchildren, Anthony J. McIntosh and his wife Tina of Athol, Stormi H. Knight of Somerville and Ellie M. Knight of Carlsbad, CA; three great-grandchildren, Abbigayle Perry McIntosh, Alexander Stephen McIntosh and Brent William Haskins; a sister, Marilyn L. Farnum; a niece, Janice Farnum and nephews, Dean F. Farnum and David R. Farnum and numerous great nieces and nephews.         Family and friends will honor and remember Bill’s life at the Athol Congregational Church, 1225 Chestnut Street, Athol on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Beverly Prestwood-Taylor, pastor officiating.   Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery and calling hours will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Higgins-O’Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main Street, Athol.   The family requests no flowers or other donations.  Rather he asks, “Don’t weep for me, don’t be sad.  I had a long and happy life.”  In memory of William please take the time to tell someone how much they are loved.    For further information or to share a memory with the family go to: www.higginsoconnorfuneralhome.com. $(document).ready(function(){ });
