ATHOL – William Donald “Bill” Qualters 91, formerly of 147 Lincoln Ave., Athol died December 14, 2015 at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke. He was born April 10, 1924 in Athol and until recently always made his home in Athol. He was predeceased by the love of his life Connie (Kelton) Qualters to whom he was married for 65 years.
He leaves behind a daughter, Sheryl Brault and Sharon of Hatfield, 2 grandchildren: Darryl Brault of Amherst and Diane Snyder and her husband Tom of Ontario, Canada, 7 great grandchildren: Adrianna, Skylar, Alexis, Matthew, Ashley, Kellen and Harper, and I great great grandson , Bentley.
Bill was a hard working family man. He worked at L. S. Starrett Company for 45 years retiring in 1987. He was on the Athol Fire Department for 37 years retiring as Deputy Chief.
Bill loved most sports- both watching and participating. In his younger years he played football, hockey, baseball and softball. Later he bowled on a local bowling league and played golf at Ellenwood Country Club.
He was very proud of his service to his country during WWII. He was a Staff Sergeant, Company C 36th Armored Infantry Regiment. The battles and campaigns that he participated in were in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. His decorations and citations consist of the Bronze Star, EAME Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster and a Victory Medal.
Bill was also known for his quick wit and sense of humor. Even the day before his death he managed a couple of one liners that brought a smile to those present. We love you Dad, Grampy, Great Grampy and Great Great Grampy and will miss you very much.
A graveside service will be held in the spring.
