ATHOL-Winifred P. (MacDonald) "Winnie" Gormley, 83, of 462 Twitchell Street, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002 in Athol Memorial Hospital, following an illness. Her husband of 36 years, Earl F. "Skip" Gormley, died in 1976. She leaves a son, Donald R. Gormley and his wife, Janice K. Gormley of Huntington, MA; two grandchildren: Michael W. Gormley, and his wife Meghean, of San Diego, CA, and Alison A. Gormley and her fiancee, Justin Fabella of New York City; two sisters, Cynthia Trinque of Bridgewater, MA, and Marguerite Donnelly of Fitchburg, MA; a brother, James Stewart, Jr. of Orange, MA; a sister-in-law, Betty MacDonald of Athol; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by two brothers, Howard MacDonald and Roger MacDonald, and a sister, Dorothy Stone.
She was born in Athol, daughter of Thomas and Esther (Jardine) MacDonald, and was a lifelong resident of town. She graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1936.
Mrs. Gormley worked for the L. S. Starrett Company for 33 years, retiring in 1984 as a supervisor in the indicator room. Previously she worked for the J. F. MacElwain Shoe Company in Athol and the Orange Shoe Shop. She was a member of the Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church, and at one time was an advisor for the Tri-Hi-Y girls' group. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and was an avid reader.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at 10 a.m. in the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main Street. Rev. Dr. R. Lee Smith, pastor of Starrett Memorial United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Calling hours in the funeral home are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2002.
