Woodward T. Johnson

May 27, 1945 — August 22, 2024

Ashburnham

Woodward Tingley Johnson passed away peacefully on August 22nd, 2024 in Gardner Massachusetts.

Woodward (Woody) was born on May 27th, 1945 in Providence, Rhode Island, the youngest of three children to Thomas Lee Johnson Jr. and Virginia Tingley Madeira. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Florence Johnson; his son, Daniel Johnson and his wife Danyel of Thompson's Station, TN; his step-daughter, Cher Boutwell and her husband Rick of Ashburnham, MA; and his six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his two sisters, Diana Washburn and Linda Emerson.

Throughout his life he had many passions and his excitement and perseverance to explore them was one of his defining characteristics. These ranged from building a log cabin and living off the grid, to patents for solar generators he invented, to being a musician and a pioneer in natural foods. He was known around Ashburnham, MA and Burke, VT for his company Woodland Energy and he would have newspaper articles written about him for things like driving up and down the mountain everyday in a solar powered vehicle to get the mail.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren whether it was at home or trips around the world and could always be counted on for using expressions that were uniquely his. From “That’s hot” to “Far-out” to “Make everyday awesome”, his optimistic and positive outlook on life will be carried on by his family and all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, he would have liked donations to the Ashburnham Conservation Trust that protects much of the land in his hometown.

Kevin J. Mack, Walter C. Taylor, and Melissa A. McQuaid, Funeral Directors.
